In a film whose sole operating principle seems to be that its female co-stars share a resemblance, the audience is asked to sit still for roughly an hour until a sweet-natured college freshman finally figures out that her roommate is a psychopath. While it’s not unusual for viewers to figure such things out before a protagonist in a B-movie of this sort, Sonny Malhi’s screenplay takes her cluelessness to a truly stratospheric level. Much is made of the sweet-natured freshman,
Sara, having just moved from Des Moines, which in the world of this film is a magical, mystical place where mental illnesses are unknown and violence a foreign concept.
Sara is played by Minka Kelly, a fresh-faced young actress whose primary asset is being able to present innocence without it curdling into sickliness. The roommate in question, Rebecca, is inhabited by Leighton Meester, who brings an extremely low-key creep to her scenes – so low-key, in fact, that one could be forgiven for thinking that she was thinking of something else most of the time. And who could blame her? Most viewers certainly will be.
As a clone of too-close-for-comfort films like Single White Female, The Roommate fails on every level, barely sincere enough to present a coherent story and almost never sufficiently campy to make the dire goings-on engaging on any level. And for a film that includes Billy Zane playing a louche fashion design professor to not register as camp is a failure of almost unprecedented proportions.
Malhi’s grindingly obvious screenplay takes Sara and Rebecca through a series of rote scenes where Rebecca clandestinely scares off as many of Sara’s other relationships as she can, from an ex-boyfriend to a bubbly blonde (Alyson Michalka, stuck playing the same token slut that she did in “http://www.filmcritic.com/reviews/2010/easy-a/”>Easy A). Occasionally the filmmakers remember that suspense is important, and so throw in something like a laughable stalking episode in a shower stall that briefly threatens to turn into some Chained Heat homage. But in the main, Rebecca’s obsession with Sara is not only unexplained and unexplored but also uninteresting in the extreme.
From the very start, Kelly and Meester generate zero rapport, with Kelly in particular evincing all the personality of a block of stone. Every now and again, Cam Gigandet (about the only performer here to show evidence of a pulse, or ability) shows up to grin and crack wise as Sara’s new frat-guy boyfriend, who strangely doesn’t attract the same level of hatred from Rebecca as do everyone else who even looks twice at Sara. Without even the slightest evidence of an actual relationship between the film’s two leads, it’s next to impossible to either buy that even somebody as generous with her time as Sara would put up with Rebecca’s possessive behavior for a tenth the time that she does here.
Eventually the film tries to doppelganger its way out of having a plot or even any noticeable sense of the perverse, and there’s some vaguely Poison Ivy-esque material wherein people dangle precariously from windows or find themselves held at gunpoint only to be saved at the last moment. But none of it adds up to much, as should be expected from a film that can’t even get a good laugh out of Billy Zane playing a college professor.
