Our Involvement In Celebrity Scandals And Our Adoration Of Celebrities Imparts Fortune

Evolutionary biologists say it is instinctive for humans to look up to people that get attention since they have succeeded in a society. In prehistoric times, this would have meant honouring good hunters and elders. But as hunting is not now an indispensable skill and longevity is more globally achievable, these qualities are no more revered. Rather, we look to celebrity scandals, whose fame and fortune we want to emulate.

Evolutionary anthropologist Francesco Gill-White from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia stated New Scientist ; “It makes sense for you to grade individuals according to how skilled they are at the behaviors you are trying to copy, because whoever is getting more of what everybody wants is likely using above-average methods.” But Doctor Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Liverpool, remarked following celebrities did not always mean they were seen as model. “We ‘re transfixed even when we don’t go out of our way to imitate them.” He said people observed how celebrities behaved because they received a great deal of money from society and people desired to ensure it was invested decently. And some psychologists query whether what has been nicknamed celebrity worship syndrome is such a good thing. They advise it could be symptomatic that individuals find it easier to form unreal relationships with the famous than with normal people – or that such behaviors are a sign of depression or panic or anxiety.

The extreme end of celebrity adoration involves obsessive and possibly even dangerous stalking where people consider they have to be close to their idols. But analysts say these people make up just a small ratio of celebrity worshippers. James Houran, a psychologist from Southern Illinois University Medical School in Springfield, has helped devise the Celebrity Attitude Scale, which quantifies people’s interest in celebrities. He said : “Just idolising a celebrity does not make you dysfunctional. “But it does put you at risk of being so. “There is this patterned advance of behaviors, and if you begin, we do n’t know what’s going to stop you”.

Dr John Maltby, lecturer in psychological science at the University of Leicester, has analysed links between attitudes to celebrities and personality types. He said that data from 3,000 people proved only around 1 % showed obsessional tendencies. Ten %, who tended to be neurotic, tense, worked up and temperamental, exhibited intense interest in celebrity scandals. Around 14 % said they would make a particular attempt to read about their favorite celebrity and to socialize with people who shared their interest. But he said the other 75 % of the human population do not take any interest in celebrities’ lives. “More often than not, the vast majority of people will identify a favorite celebrity, but do n’t say they read about them or think about them day in and day out.” He added : “Like most things, its fine as long as it does n’t dominate your life”.

Jon frequently writes about celebrity scandals and Hollywood celebrities.

Q&A: Celebrity scandal aftermaths?
I’m writing a paper about a celebrity scandal and its consequences. I need a story about a celebrity doing something scandalous, like making racist comments or hateful remarks about someone/something, and then taking action to prove that he/she has changed/ didn’t mean it, etc. Thank you!
