The Life Of Iconic Comedian Eddie Murphy
On April 3, 1961 a prolific actor came into the world by the name of Edward Regan Murphy. Today, “Eddie” Murphy and transpired into an outstanding actor, voice actor, film director, producer, comedian and singer. There are few people who have the talent and skills he possesses which is precisely why he has led such a successful career.
Murphy was born in Brooklyn, New York to his mother Lilian and his father Charles Edward Murphy. His father was a transit police officer, but also an amateur actor and comedian himself. By the age of 15, Eddie Murphy was beginning to write and perform his own routines that are highly influenced by Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor.
As a stand-up comedian, he frequently would perform at the Bay Area Comedy Club where Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg did. He was known for frequent swearing and sketches that talked about a wide array of people including African Americans, Italian Americans, overweight people and homosexuals. It only makes sense that Murphy has credited a great deal of his inspiration to Richard Pryor for entering comedy.
He first began to gain some attention when he became a regular on Saturday Night Live and was credited for helping revitalize the series. Some of the well-known characters he portrayed included a version of the Little Rascals character Buckwheat. Some of the other memorable characters included Mr. Robinson, which was a spoof of Mr. Rogers, and Gumby.
In 1982 he made his debut on the big screen in a movie called 48 hrs. with Nick Nolte. It was a hit as it was released during the Christmas season in 1982. More Eddie Murphy movies came in the next couple of years, but Beverly Hills Cop in 1984 really catapulted his career. From there he went on to act in countless other movies.
From 1989 to the mid 1990′s his box office results were lower than usual until he hit the bottom with Beverly Hills Cop III in 1994. He would eventually climb out of the slump with such movies as The Nutty Professor, Shrek and Daddy Day Care. He has gone on to be the voice of Donkey in four Shrek’s total.
It has been a rocky road for Eddie Murphy with several high points and some low points in his career. Overall, he has received Golden Globe Award nominations and won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in 2007 for Dreamgirls. He was ranked #10 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of all time. And after countless years of acting, he continues to flourish to this day.
