Eve: How could Eve and Adam have sinned when they didn’t know the difference between good and evil?
When Eve and Adam were in Paradise they at first didn’t know good and evil. The serpent advised Eve to eat from the tree so that she would be like god: knowing good and evil. She wants to be wise and eats the fruit. And so does Adam.

Christians often state that people were given the choice between good and evil. But it seems Eve ‘sinned’ even before she knew the difference!

How can one sin that doesn’t know the difference between good and evil?

The following is the answer: (Hint: The correct answer provided by the users, does not guarantee the right.)

They knew,God told them not to eat from that tree.

Answer by mcq316
Regardless of the serpent, GOD told them ‘don’t eat the fruit’ and they did anyways. They knew the rules and they broke the rules.

That is why it is generally referred to as a transgression in scholar circles. They were told not to eat of it and what the penalty was. But had they not made the choice we would not be here.

Answer by CJ
They were told by God not to eat it.

Answer by C. L. Richardson
They knew God told them not to touch the tree. That was enough.

Have you ever heard the saying “ignorance of the law is no excuse of the law”. If your driving down the road at 65 and a cop stops you for speeding, telling him you didn’t know the speed limit was only 55 will not get you out of the ticket. Breaking the law is breaking the law, even if you didn’t know it was.

The same applies here. Just because Adam and Eve had not experienced sin, does not mean they could not sin. If that was the case, a new born baby could never sin.

Besides that, God had told them that they were NOT to eat of the fruit of that tree. Therefore, they knew they were going against God’s Word when they did it.

Answer by Matthew
Adam & Eve knew the difference between right and wrong. That’s why when they disobeyed God, they sinned.
God didn’t want them to have a knowledge of evil. When they sinned, they “gained” the knowledge of evil.

“There were several things that that Eve did wrong prior to eating the fruit. The first was her misspeaking while responding to the serpent. When the serpent (who was speaking the words of Satan) asked in Genesis 3:1: “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’ ?” her response was less than perfect:

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’” (Genesis 3:2–3; emphasis added)
Compare this to what God had commanded in Genesis 2:16–17:

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
The Woman made four mistakes in her response:

She added the command not to touch the fruit (“Nor shall you touch it”). This may even be in contradiction with the command to tend the Garden (Genesis 2:15), which may have necessitated touching the tree and the fruit from time to time. This also makes the command from God to seem exceptionally harsh.
She amended that God allowed them to freely eat. This makes God out to be less gracious.
She amended that God allowed them to freely eat from every tree. Again, this makes God out to be less gracious.
She amended the meaning of die. The Hebrew in Genesis 2:17 is “die-die” (muwth-muwth), which is often translated as “surely die” or literally as “dying you shall die,” which indicates the beginning of dying, an ingressive sense. In other words, if they would have eaten the fruit, then Adam and Eve would have begun to die and would return to dust (which is what happened when they ate in Genesis 3:19). If they were meant to die right then, Genesis 2:17 should have used muwth only once as is used in the Hebrew meaning “dead,” “died,” or “die” in an absolute sense and not beginning to die or surely die as die-die is commonly used. What Eve said was “die” (muwth) once instead of the way God said it in Genesis 2:17 as “die-die” (muwth-muwth). So, she changed God’s Word to appear harsher again by saying they would die almost immediately. [See also Genesis 2:17—“you shall surely die”.] “

The apostle Paul tells us that God made plans for our marvelous future even before He created our first parents, Adam and Eve. He planned our destiny “according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began” (2 Timothy 1:9).

Our eternal future was a part of God’s great plan and purpose before this world came to be. Even then, God had determined that only a perfect Redeemer could bring His master plan to completion—as He foresaw that human beings would veer from the course He set for them.

At the creation of the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, God presented a choice between two ways of life. He clearly instructed these first human beings to partake of the tree of life. As their Creator, God wanted them to develop a close personal relationship with Him. The tree of life in the Garden of Eden symbolized an obedient relationship leading to eternal life (Genesis 2:9; 3:22).

However, there was another option—one that would lead to disaster! Instead of choosing life through obeying Him, they could select a life of deciding for themselves what is right and wrong in disobedience to God. Another tree in the garden symbolized this choice—the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:16-17; 3:1-6). God explicitly commanded them not to take from this tree, but He didn’t prevent them from doing so. He allowed them free will.

By their determined actions, Adam and Eve rejected the way of living that God had commanded (Genesis 3:6). Rather than relying on God to show them the right way to live, they chose to rely on themselves. They set off on a wrong course that is a mixture of good and evil.

By their decision, they brought on themselves the penalty of sin, which is suffering and ultimately death (Romans 6:23). Since their time, all of humanity has followed their example and become corrupted by sin (Romans 5:12). All have fallen short of God’s revealed way of life (Romans 3:23). Humanity to this day continues in that way, which leads to death (verses 9-12).

For that reason God’s plan includes a Savior, the Messiah—”the [sacrificial] Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, human beings can be reconciled to God, and God’s forgiveness of their sin will remove the death penalty (Colossians 1:20-22).

With God’s forgiveness and help, man can be set back on course to receiving from Him the gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23; 8:11). The destiny of mankind lies in this eternal life.

  1. phoebe61 Says:

God told them not to eat of the fruit of the tree of life. Eve ate of the fruit as did Adam and there eyes were opened to knowledge. They were told not to do something and yet they did, therefore they were punished by being exiled from the garden of eden.

  2. Mrg_Love_and_Wisdom Says:

I have answered this so many times !!!

In brief, everything God did for Adam and Eve was good. Every good thing that they had was from God. Then along comes someone who never did squat for them, accuses God of ripping them off, and she goes with it.

That IS what evil is about. It is always personal before it is anything else.

Suppose your child before the ‘age of reason’ as they say, murders you. Does he know it’s evil. You bet he does. She sinned and THAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE. In the narrative they both know naturally what you seem unable to conceive, that they had in fact done wrong.

You obey the one who did nothing for you against the express orders of the one who has done everything for you.

That is the best I can do. Wait 10 minutes and someone will ask it again.

  3. mzJakes Says:

They knew the difference, but only intellectually. It’s kinda like a child ‘knowing’ broccoli tastes bad but has never tried it (ok, so it’s not a perfect analogy). But the point is that one can logically now the difference between two choices without ever having experienced it for themselves. Once one experiences something internally, the knowledge gained is infinitely superior to the logical deduction.

When Adam and Eve ate from the tree, they took that knowledge and internalized it…thus knowing it as they never knew it before.

  4. Gardener for God(dmd) Says:

Eve disobeyed. God told them NOT to go near that tree or even touch the fruit, let alone eat it. So while they did not know good from evil, as it had not yet entered into humanity, they DID receive a direct direction from God as to what to do and not to do – when they disobeyed that – then sin entered humanity.

So while you have a point that they did not know good from evil, it still didn’t excuse the CHOICE they made to disobey having been informed from their creator.

You must understand – God spoke to them directly. It is not the same senario for them when they were created as it is for us when we are born. The circumstances were different, a concept that most humans could not even begin to understand in the relationship that Adam and Eve had with God. Remember, God withdrew his presence to be noteable without the grace in faith of humanity after this incident. God can not be where sin is – Adam and Eve repented, this is true – and they carried knowledge of God that we do not, nor did their children. Though their children had a closer knowledge than what we do, it was not exactly the same as Adam and Eve’s. The more generations that passed, it seems the further the knowledge was with the exception of a few, like Noah for example. Most of Noah’s time was on blind faith up until the Lord took note of him and spoke to him directly. Why? Because Noah was righteous and pleasing in his ways to God – therefore, God showed his presence to Noah. Christians today can also have the presence of the Lord having been saved if they are in faith. The problem is that many do not have that Biblical FAITH – which is the total and undoubting TRUST on God and on his promises to us. Jesus said, even the faith of the size of a mustard seed could move mountains. Why aren’t the mountains moving? There is lack of faith for it to be so – that is why.

  5. Jay Z Says:

To disobey is to suffer the consequences.

God had told them, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:16,17)

The choice to disobey ushered in the consequence and the knowledge that sin was now ruling the human race instead of God.

  6. jason_liberg Says:

Good question. Also, who put the tree of knowledge in the garden and who created and allowed the serpent to tempt Eve? Seems to me god is responsible for the whole mess. Christians will never use logic and admit it. Oh well, Adam and Eve never existed anyway.

  7. ebed Says:

    sinning results from disobedience

they were told to “not eat” when they disobeyed they sinned.

  8. ? Says:

That is the lie that Satan gave Eve, that they could make their own decisions on “Good and Bad” and ignore God’s directions.

They were intelligent people, and knew what was good and bad. It was the opportunity as Eve saw it to make those choices for themselves without the approval of God.

And, when you read the rest of the scriptures, Adam was not deceived but decided to join his wife in this revolt.

The tree didn’t give wisdom or knowledge, rather it was a test of obedience and appreciation for God.

  9. Peter Says:

Their charge from God was not to eat of the tree in the middle of the Garden. Satan deceived her and she trusted him and reminded himn that they were not to eat of the tree. This is original sin and how sin enteredt he world. Genesis gives that account. Eve prepared food from this and they both ate and God was angered as he instructed them not too.
Yes ther eis a difference. If Adam and Eve were not told to eat of that tree then it would not have been sin.
Coyly Satan mentioned they would have knowledge as a result. Also did they were chastened and life changed for them as a result.
As believers learn of perhaps personal idols, objects and lifestylre God shows us in many ways to avoid doing or saying certain things. He generally affords us grace. As we turn from sin and accept that we repent to noty repeat and after vioctory comes.
Today the serpent takes up many forms in the world and is bent on deceiving the nations and people thereof. So we become armed with the Holy spirit of God to discern truth and guide us.
As small sins can grow to larger ones.
Being receptive to the Holy Spirit keeps us from God by the burdens and obstacles and the sin we often carry mostly of ourselves.
We lessen our struggles when sin (major ones especially) is diminished or removed. We realize that lusts, pleasures, desires can deceive us. Sin is but for a moment the scripture says.
Other areas of daily life where we need knowledge of the holy spirit gives focus with love as God’s presence abides in us .
Putting off sin helps us really and we will feel more alive and restored.
Daily we sin and some form of fellowship, and devotional bible study and prayer even within our day helps us significantly and the time passes more quickly and jopy increases in our spirit man/women.

  10. Val Says:

You’re going to like this….. I hope. It’s a bit complex but bear with it.

Genesis is a factual creation thesis taken from the far more ancient Ur, Sommerland civilisation. In the Bible version, there is a lot missing and quite a bit has been misinterpreted. the original translators, bless em, did not understand the subject matter because they were seeing it from a different perspective to its original context.
The original context followed the belief system of that time which was animistic, shamanic. and the origial language is in symbolic form. This is wonderful because we can relook at the symobogy with new eyes to regain the original meaning. They understood that languages mutate very quickly but symbology does not. Two wavey lines means the same today as it did millenia ago.
With that in mind lets have another look at the main symbology.

    Adam – man
    Eve – women
Garden of eden – primordial jungle
Original sin, obtaining the knowlege of good and bad – man becomes self aware, becomes sentient. this is why we are all tainted by it and why we can never go back or find it.
Tree – geneology, family and family roots.
Orchard – other geneologies, thier family and family roots.
Apple – the fruit there of. ie it was taken in, we are what we eat.
Snake – an energy. ie, the urge to breed.
Death becomes an issue – it never entered thier heads before that moment in time.
Womens birthing problems increase – it is the most vulnerable moment in a womens life, women die, it is worrying.

There are other similar stories later on in Genesis following the same theme.

Basically man cross bred with a similar speices and gained self awareness and we became homosapiens. The fact that Eve got the blame is probably because the female proto homosapien did the cross breeding. the males thought it was a travesty and called it a sin. lol.

Now doesn’t that sound more like it.
